Usually our students all receive the same task, worksheet, activity, etc.
Our strugglers will struggle and need a lot of assistance.
Our advanced will finish quickly and be bored.
Pathway Practice provides students with a way to practice each standard ON THEIR LEVEL! Of course you have to know their data in order to do this, or even better, allow your students to know their data so they can grab their appropriate Pathway level to practice.
Below are examples of a 3rd grade standard, separated into the 3 pathway leveled tasks for students. Notice how they are all the same standard, just leveled. The remediation students (pathway A) did not get a grade level lower skill, the extenders (pathway C) did not get the next grade level skill. We can differentiate within the standard. This way every student is able to practice the same skill, just on their level.
This task is based on the standard to solve for the area of a rectangle.
In Task A, students are instructed to finish the rectangles shown by using manipulatives, grid paper and/or drawing.
*Notice how students are still practicing area, but because their data shows they are below level on this standard, they are receiving manipulatives to help, and are given pictorial models that are almost complete to help guided them to the solution.
This task is based on the standard to solve for the area of a rectangle.
In Task B, students are instructed to create and design a playground using only rectangles. Students must calculate the area of each piece of the playground, then solve for the total area of the playground.
*Notice how students are still practicing area, but because their data shows they are on level, they are getting the chance to practice their knowledge through application.
This task is based on the standard to solve for the area of a rectangle.
In Task C, students are instructed to solve for the missing side of a rectangle when given one dimension and the area.
*Notice how students are still practicing area, but because their data shows they are above level, they are getting the chance to practice their knowledge through a challenge. However they still have the option to use manipulatives. Just because a child is "higher" does not mean they don't want to or need to still use hands on materials to help them think through the problem.
In the Pathway Program you have the option of an A La Carte menu or
